"How far is the emotional response to mainstream films triggered by specific techniques used by the film-makers"

Refer to Nosferatu, Psycho, The Exorcist, American Werewolf, Let the Right One in, Aliens in your answer, plus any other films that you feel are appropriate. These extra films do not have to be Horror films.
